Congratulations! to GM Alex Moiseyev of Dublin, Ohio as winner of the
2012 Tennessee Open Tournament, his ninth time.
Congratulations! to IM Larry Keen of Halls, TN as the 2012 Tennessee
State Champion, his fifth straight year
winning this title, and his sixth time as a Tennessee State Champ.
Congratulations! to Lynn Steelman of Crandall, GA as the 2012 Tennessee
Open Majors Champion.
Congratulations! to Paul Hines of Russellville, KY as the 2012 Tennessee Open
Minors Champion.
GM stands for Grand Master, IM
for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles
given by WCDF to distinguish players. Congratulations! to Kim Wills and Vonda Jones as Tennessee
State Open Women Champions. In the Youth Division, Alex Holmes placed 1st and Trey Stanley
placed 2nd. Congratulations to these young men! ACF Rating - January 2012, Ratings supplied by ICH
Checkers www.icheckers.net Program
written by Vadim Khavinson, calculated by Joe Moore/Eric Strange, and
updated by Joe Moore, as ACF ratings processor. icheckers ratings "T" separates player's opponent from player's accumulated
game points.
Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4. Frank Davis, President of Tennessee Checker Association
welcomed 43 players from 11States: 13 from TN, 11 from NC, 6 from KY,
2 from OH, GA, PA, IN, and 1 from AL, LA, MO, OK, WV. This group of
players included 9 State Champions, 2 Grand Masters, 4
International Masters, 1 Candidate Master, and the
3-Move / 11-Man World Champion.
In the 3:00 pm
business meeting Frank reported on the Gene Lindsay Fund, reporting this year's
interest $643 was down from last years, but the principal was secure in a
deposit account at F&M Bank in Clarksville, TN requiring 3 signatures (Davis,
Christian, & Burton). The interest yield will hopefully increase.
Only interest is used to fund the TN Open. We voted to keep the
same TCA officers: Frank Davis - President & the TN Open Director, Ken
Christian - Vice President, and Mary Davis -
Secretary/Treasurer of TCA & administrator / score-keeper for TN Open.
Tournament rules were reviewed and we voted to
re-pairing opponents
so that it could only occur in last round when necessary. Frank would
make a judgment call on overtime game endings or elect another Masters to
help him, if a computer analysis was requested by a Master it should show a score
value of 60 point for a win. (Posted Rules) Frank Davis also recognized the
Stanleys... (Mr. Bill -
Grandfather, Teal - Son, and Trey - Grandson). Three generations of
checker players form Greensboro, NC who usually attends TN Open and the
Southern Open. Alex Moiseyev spoke to the players explained his upcoming
matches, and his take on world and international activities, what he thought
would help promote checkers, and how he personally felt he could support and
promote checker was staying as active as possible, playing as many tournaments
as possible, continue to write his books, annotate, share his games, and
enthusiasm. Kim reported on her Youth Program in K2 - K5 School Systems and
reported she was bring kids to the Youth National in Lebanon, TN. John Acker had BC and
other books for sale to help raise money for the Youth Program. Several
spoke in favor of
Kim's effort, saying they
wanted to help so she could continue her worthwhile endeavor.
Kim reported her appreciation on ACF forum. Kim signed up to play Majors but was ask by the Scorekeeper if
she would play down to fill the Minors field so they would have an even number
of players, thus her $5.00 donation to the prize fund. This Tournament was special, since this Tennessee Open was dedicated to
Mr. Hugh R. Burton. He was the "Tournament Honoree,"
Frank Davis
recognized and presented a nice plaque
and several players spoke about Mr. Burton's accomplishments and contribution to checkers. This
was a fitting tribute to Mr. Burton since he has won the Tennessee State
Championship 39 times over a life time of supporting and playing tournament checkers.
2012 Hugh Burton's Plaque
We received plenty of door prizes supplied by several local
merchants, Wilson County Visitors Center, Wilson County Chamber of Commerce,
and Wilson Bank & Trust. All in the form of meal coupons & discounts,
merchandise, and
donated items. The winners were drawn at random. Ken Christian is TCA public relations man and he continues to do an outstanding job with
merchants' donations and public relations in Wilson Co.
Management at Americas Best Value Inn & Suites again confirmed
their appreciation for the TN Open venue by providing pizza and soft drinks on Friday
evening which everyone (players, spouses, & family) enjoyed!
This makes the sixth
year TN Checker Association has chosen Americas Best Value
Inn & Suites after moving it from Best Western Executive Inn, Lebanon in 2006
which ended that long time venue. We appreciated the donations and
contributions which totaled $1,810.00 for the total cash prize fund.
Frank Davis,
Tournament Director and Referee in addition to Mary Davis, scorekeeper did a
fantastic job as usual. We really appreciate these well run tourneys and
also John Acker reporting the results in a timely manner using his laptop and
Google documents.
Most of the TN players took time to sign two sympathy cards,
one to Arwood Smith for the loss of his wife Verna and the other to Elbert Jones for the loss of his daughter Tabitha. Many wives attended this tournament and they seem to enjoy the
company of the other wives. Otis Jones and Tommy Martin attended, Tommy
is "plumtart" on Play OK. A severe thunderstorm passed through Nashville then
Lebanon, Friday evening with high winds, heavy rain and large marble size hail which
pecked dimples in most of the cars in the parking lot. Danny Hughes
withdrew from the tournament because of tornado damage at his home & farm. Sunday service was enjoyable with opening invocation, singing, a message by
Frank. The Lebanon Democrat did a nice pre-tournament article and a follow up
article on the tournament results Monday.
A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all
who attended.
